I found a bunch of discs today. They’re CD-Rs and are labeled as “Platinum Series”. After doing a little research I found that it’s a set of pop music for DJs that’s supposed to be leased.

I found three of these holders for a total of 20 discs. I thought I had a complete set, discs 1-20, but then found that the collection actually had 40 discs. Oh well...

Do you do wedding receptions?

Nope. I’ve seen photographer friends deal with bridezillas, and I refuse to have anything to do with weddings.

Oh! My radio experience can help here - yes, they’re “leased” but there is a certain expectation that many will get damaged or destroyed through normal rotation. You also often get duplicate songs across multiple months or genre collections. But yes, you legally only have the right to buy and play those if you pay for the rights by buying that service. That saaaaaiiiiddd.......Often, you’ll make copies of some of them if their either are getting a lot of play or if you have to do an event off-site and don’t want your master copy to get destroyed or stolen. Sounds like that might’ve been the case here.

You’re not breaking any laws by owning it though, those are already chalked up to “discs were damaged or lost while in use”. We’ve had CD folders go missing during live events or have DJs accidentally shred one when cleaning out our music library of damaged/old discs due to the sheer amount of play they got leaving lots of scratches on them. So it’s often hard to determine where things ended up and sometimes you’d find out you’ve had a CD-R of a disc on play for the past week since the master disc got crushed when some newbie sat on it or rolled the chair over it after dropping it.

I used to play for weddings regularly. I hated it. Collecting my money was often like getting blood from a stone. They would pay thousands upon thousands for flowers, photographers, gowns, food, etc, but they choked on $200 for the trumpet player. I also had a bride call me once to do a wedding. I said, “Who is the organist?” She replied, “No organ. O rgans sound like baseball games.” I didn’t take the gig.

My high school jazz band did a wedding reception. We had to play the bunny hop while a couple score people paraded around in a line. No amount of therapy will ever erase that memory.

I would guess no one uses physical discs for this anymore?  It must be all licensed play lists now.

Was it a paying gig?

For the school. Not for me.
